I'm absolutely living for the revival of 90's fashion at the moment, though I've found myself sounding like my mum squawking "I remember that the first time!" Platform trainers and wide leg pants though - I love it. My jeans used to be so baggy, wide and long they would suck up puddles right up to the knee. I'm currently looking for a pair that will catapult me back to my 16 year old skater youth. (Not that I could actually skate, I just used to carry a skateboard around in the hope skater boys would want to snog me.)
A group of friends and I are definitely reconnecting with the 90's via music. I guess we never really stopped, but this year we have managed to see Nine Inch Nails and the Prodigy and both were gigs of a lifetime.
The Prodigy especially are really special to me. Keith Flint was my idol. It gave me the confidence as a shy teen to really come out of my shell and just wear whatever the F*ck I wanted, be unapologetically me. When he passed I think it was the first celebrity death that made me cry (though not sure how I'll cope when Attenborough goes). So to see them again this year, with an amazing tribute to Keith in the show - well it was pretty emotional.
One of the best things about owning a laser cutter and designing for a job is that you can accessorise everything. My friend wanted some Voodoo People laser cut acrylic hoops, in neon pink acrylic and neon yellow acrylic to go with her gig outfit. So I got those sorted for her.
I decided I wanted orange acrylic mirror flame earrings, with "Twisted Firestarter" laser etched into each one. I made them big, because - statement earrings.
Music is such a big influence for a lot of my work, as it's such a big part of my life. From my acrylic mirror portrait earrings, to the odd nod to a song lyric in some of my perspex hoop earrings. A lot of my designs are designed with "how would it look in the club?" in mind and always - "Can I dance wearing this?"
I've got some very obvious 90's designs in my line such as the standard symbol of the time - the Rave smiley. But the 90's has more of a subtle influence across my work I guess because I'll always have one platform trainer clad foot in the era.
